EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 80 independent research groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology. This illustrious institution is home to various Nobel Prize winners including the BioNTech leadership, responsible for the creating the first Covid-19 vaccines. To celebrate EMBL’s 40th Anniversary, we were invited to collaborate in an audio visual experience for 1,500 guests. Our brief was to make EMBL’s research innovation both visible and audible.
Working with Visual Drugstore and video mapping expert Markos Aristides Kern, we created a sonic identity based on from EMBL’s research approach. The result was an immersive audio-visual experience, with 360 degree video mapping on EMBL’s impressive company headquarters in Heidelberg.
The result was a stunning, emotionally engaging experience that featured EMBL’s scientific images, that started and ended with the sound of a heartbeat. The building was brought to life, showcasing EMBL’s research and captured in the idea ‘Learning from Life’, driven by the soundtrack.
The audience was drawn in by the immersive sound and visuals, leaving them feeling in awe not only of the incredible experience they had just enjoyed but also by the possibilities EMBL’s work presents. This very public event attracted widespread media coverage and created deeper public engagement with EMBL.
